A foreign language can be helpful in the workplace

For example during the summers while at VT I worked in blue collar jobs (i.e. icehouse, poultry plant, security, etc) where majority of the employees were immigrants who didn't speak much or good English. I was able to use the Spanish I learned in HS and at VT.

After graduating from VT, 1 of my first jobs was to work on a contract for a company whose customer was an oil company who was doing work in Russia. 1 of my duties was to review all the government certificates and permits (all in Russian) to make sure the customer was in compliant with all the requirements. Even though I didn't know Russian, I was given the task because 1 of my minors was Political Science and could navigate my way through the Russian bureaucracy good enough to make sure my POC in Moscow (native Russian) got me all the required permits/documents on time. Let me tell you it was painful to learn enough Russian on the fly to be able to read the documents.
