There are certain degrees from certain universities that almost set up the graduates for financial failure, because the cost of the degree is so far out of proportion with the expected compensation for someone in that field. While I agree that a decision about a college major shouldn't be based entirely on money, I do think students have to weigh the cost of the degree vs. their potential earnings. If someone has to borrow $200,000 to earn a degree in a low-demand field that might only pay $30,000 - $40,000 a year, then that person will be in debt for many years and may never be able to buy a house.

So while I think it's a little extreme to eliminate majors altogether, I do think that kids are being forced away from certain areas of study simply because those degrees may not ever "pay them back". I like what Mike Rowe has been talking about, which is that a 4-year degree is not always the best option. Some folks might be much better served, skill-wise and financially speaking, by going to trade school. There is a growing need for skilled trades and at the same time, the supply seems to be diminishing.
