Yeah, I was VERY fortunate that my parents could afford to...


...pay for all of my degree from VT, and also that I finished before the state funding cuts really impacted tuition. I think my degree probably cost less than $40,000 total. That is still a lot of money to me, and I will be forever grateful to my parents for working hard to make that possible for me...but that number pales in comparison to the cost of a degree today. Just in the past 10-12 years, the rise in average tuition costs is incredible.

Like you said, the current/future generations of college grads have it tough. We have already discussed the possibility of having to steer our child away from pursuing a 4-year degree unless it makes financial sense. We won't be faced with that decision for another 12 years, but I don't expect us to be able to afford to pay for all of a $100,000+ college degree.
