Every time I hear this suggestion, I think of Chris Kyle.

Chris Kyle was the Navy SEAL sniper featured in the movie American Sniper. He was a highly decorated combat veteran with 150 confirmed kills and countless hours spent in combat. If anyone was ready for crap to go down, it was him. In 2013, Kyle and a friend took a 25-year old Marine veteran to a training range in the strange belief that this would help the guy with his PTSD. On the way to the range, Kyle suspected this guy was dangerous, texted his friend that this guy was dangerous, and the friend agreed. Both Kyle and his friend were armed and yet they were both shot dead before they could unholster their weapons.

Kyle suspected the man he was with was dangerous, and Kyle was armed and as trained and experienced with firearms as anyone could be. To the extent that anyone could be prepared and forewarned for a situation, Kyle was. And yet this mentally unstable guy shot two armed, highly trained men dead and drove away.

I could spend the rest of my life at a firing range and never develop a fraction of the mastery Chris Kyle had with fire arms. So how the hell is a gun going to help me?
