UMD is first and foremost a basketball school.


I wouldn't imagine UMD in the 80s giving up the league with basketball powers UNC and Duke to go to that league proposed by Joe Paterno. UMD may have considered the Big East, but Georgetown had UMD blocked like Villanova had Temple blocked.

The ACC was not equitable in the 80s for sharing TV money. The football TV money came from the CFA and was equitable, but the ACC had its own basketball TV contracts. UNC and Duke each received 1/3 and the other 6 members split the remaining 1/3. It was not until Florida State came in that Gene Corrigan was able to convince John Swofford and Tom Butters to give that up by promising that the FSU football money would offset anything they lost by changing to equitable revenue sharing. This is probably when John Swofford realized that the money is in football.

Things are a lot different now. Dr. Wallace Loh knew little about Maryland athletics culture, and he didn't really care. He wanted to be in the Big Ten and took them there without asking anyone. He also burned all the bridges with the ACC.
