What's this?

That may have come to light for some on this board...

but "volume" in terms of fanbase has always been the name of the game. It's not a new concept by any stretch.... but many have been distracted by the smoke a mirrors game that's been focusing on cable subscriptions, large TV markets, etc. Those TV deals and conference channels have proven to be effective to some degree, but having a large a rabid fanbase with a lot of money to spend on their respective schools still moves the needle quite well. That's why the SEC and B1G will always be a step ahead in football (the sport that drives this train) when compared to the ACC.
