The academies may not have a say in the matter though.


It is possible it is up to either DoD or Congress. Since the academies mission is different from most universities, do the 3 academies really care about the exposure that comes with being a DI school? Or is DoD and/or Congress the group that really cares about the exposure?

The questions are in regards to the Coast Guard Academy (founded in 1876) and Merchant Marine Academy (founded in 1943) which compete in DIII for athletics. What was the driving force(s) that motivated 3 academies to compete at the DI level and 2 academies to compete at the DIII level instead of having all 5 compete at the same level? Depending on the answer to that question may shed some light how things could play out in the future.
