Yep. GT had money troubles and B1G was considering throwing it at them.


GT would have gone and the ACC cookie would have rather quickly crumbled. Not that the loss of GT itself was huge, but being taken out of DC and THEN Atlanta would have cut deeply. IMO, FSU, Clemson, and anybody else with a clue and options would have also jumped off of this sinking ship.

Deserter number 3 might very well have been Virginia to the B1G. Or it might have been VT to the SEC.

And BTW, this still somewhat mythical ACC Network would have been even more daunting a task for ESPN. Did you read about how difficult it was for the new ESPN President to get the thing approved by Disney? Imagine doing so with a big fat hole in the ACC's footprint. Imagine doing so without Atlanta or Georgia, both college football hotbeds.

Anybody suggesting it wasn't a possibility is using revisionist history here. it was a real possibility.
