Air travel in the Big 12

Big 12 programs traveling to Morgantown typically fly into Pittsburgh (80 miles north) or Clarksburg (35 miles south). WVU officials have been lobbying to expand the Morgantown airport's runway, but that has been met with opposition by the Clarksburg facility. Clarksburg (North Central West Virginia Regional Airport) has a runway long enough to take larger jets than the local commercial market would ordinarily require. Morgantown has limited commercial service. Some Big 12 basketball programs charter into Morgantown when the weather is adequate.

The reality is that many Big 12 programs are not proximate to significant airports. Trips to Kansas State and Oklahoma State in particular typically involve long bus rides. Trips to Kansas go through Kansas City (50 miles) or Topeka (35 miles). Iowa State is about 40 miles from Des Moines. Even TCU is as far from DFW as WVU is from Clarksburg.
