I don't disagree with what you are saying (about the protected game)

However, it would mean that teams could have to sacrifice playing their big instate rival(s) or big interstate rivals. If VT and UVA were placed in opposite divisions, then could you both fanbases be okay with not playing each other (as a conference game) for 6 of the 8 years (home and away)? Or could you see UVA and UNC be willing to do the same?
