Blacksburg is a little over 2,000 feet above sea level which

isn't as extreme as some other places (i.e. Flagstaff, AZ is approximately 7,000 feet). Something else that might be worth considering is I remember from geology class that Blacksburg is located on a plateau (of sorts). Also, the surrounding mountains could play into it at some level. At least it could determine what direction the runway needs to be positioned, how much "clear space" the various sizes of planes need for approach and takeoff.
