I think the runway expansion is going to be 5,500 ft..

Tech would probably need somewhere from 7,000 to 8,000 ft. runway (with clearance) to land a commercial jet carrying a football team. Tech's elevation probably makes the runway length to be closer to 8,000' than 7,000'. A pilot told me that the new runway expansion will be able to handle 20 seat executive jets. I've been told as much as 40 seats but I'm no expert. So maybe sports teams with less than 20-30 players and staff can land here, but most will continue to have to land at Roanoke.
