When I signed out of JBER, I did a partial Dity move to Campbell
and drove the ALCAN "home" to VA to see my folks and then to Campbell.
That was a nice experience and netted me some nice $$$$$$.$$
I still have a ton of buddies in Alaska. I went up 12 years ago for a get together with the guys but that's been it for me.
When people talk about cruises, I tell them no way. It's just as easy to "Base" out of Anchorage and either take the train up to Denali for a day or so OR take the train to Seward OR drive down to Homer for a while. Seward and Homer were my favorite places to go since I love fishing, kayaking and hiking.
Fairbanks wasn't great when we used to go up there for joint training with the infantry guys up there (they used to have 2 battalions of "leg" infantry up there). You can go to "North Pole, Alaska" which is just a little bit north of Wainwright (I snuck off post one night in a HMMWV to go through the Taco Bell in North Pole).
Recon...did you ever run into COL Chris Vanek? At one time, he was Brigade Commander of the 75th but before that, he was my company commander. He and his wife Kim are still good friends of mine and he was a former enlisted stud who came back in as an officer and really, really did good.
