what matters to athletics is athletics...if an athletic move is good for athletics, it will get done regardless of academics.

Sure, people like university presidents are going to say nice things about academics with respect to conference membership when they can, but no one making the decisions *really* cares that much if their athletic competitors are also academic peers. (with the exception of the ivy league, which was an academic thing before it was athletic thing and is obviously a very different story)
