I read an article on american/British/European tank design, ...
... compared to Soviet/Russian tank design.
The Abrams has a larger turret design compared to the Russian designed turrets.
The Abrams tank's larger turret does present a larger target area compared to the Russian tank, but it allows the ammo to be stored in an area physically isolated from the crew. The ammo area also has blow out panels which direct an ammo explosion away from the crew.
The Russian turret is much smaller and lower providing a smaller target area. However it also causes the ammo to be stored in a ring inside the crew compartment. If a projectile penetrates the Russian tank hull, all that ammo does not provide for crew longevity.
