Hating the NCAA right now because of this.
The irony is so freaking thick. The NCAA - the all-wise governing body and rule maker of college athletics - had to have the U.S Supreme Court vote 9-0 against them last June to allow student athletes to receive benefits outside their scholarship like computers and paid internships. Oh, the horror if they got these things. Other students could do this, but not scholarship athletes.
Think about it this way. The NCAA thought their rule prohibiting education-related benefits to scholarship athletes was apparently good, sound, fair and in no need of altering or changing after what, 40-50 years? Could they not adapt to, forecast or otherwise envision the changes and money in society and college sports? Nothing at all over 40 years? Really? Is it any wonder then that this current atmosphere in college athletics is so messy? The NCAA is completely on the sideline now castrated, just watching. They are so completely inept at this that they're asking the Feds instead to make some rules to govern NIL. Yeah! Federal laws for college sports coming soon!
So to circle back to your question, I'm all for players getting more benefits and money. But there needs to be a system in place, by yesterday, to regulate this. I'm also in favor of any school, conference, division, etc. breaking away from the NCAA right now, because no entity could do worse in governing college sports. Then lastly, I'm less of a fan now, which sucks.
