I understand why you are saying that, but isn't the bigger point that we

have no checks and balances? All the professional sports have checks and balances. Consequently, as college football becomes more Professional Football, and pay to play, doesn't it also need checks and balances? In fact, your point about it being angled to fit the greediest is exactly why we need some checks and balances.

Monopolies in companies or governments are not tolerated in our country. The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL all have checks and balances, so while I don't want them to be angled towards the Alabama's or Notre Dame's of the world either, I do think they need to exist. The 85 scholarship rule was a big part of a Virginia Tech being able to play in BCS Bowls and get to the top of college football. Since we are likely headed for pay for play, there needs to be some checks and balances that give schools a even playing field.
