We’ll be masking on again off again for maybe …forever

The coronavirus genome is 30,000 letters, making the number of possible mutations effectively infinite. Since all humans and now most animals are potential hosts, the virus will continue to mutate and evolve to be more “fit” - i.e. transmissible. That is what evolution is all about. It won’t necessarily be more deadly (as Omicron was less virulent than Delta) because there is no advantage to kill the host. However, sometImes and randomly a mutation will evade immunity or be particularly virulent. No one has any clue what will happen next with these variants. The tools are vaccines, anti-virals, better indoor ventilation/filtration, and masking. You should get used to governing bodies employing the masking tool periodically to prevent transmission until they determine whether a particular surge in infections is concerning.
