Given that Notre Dame is a private school, it may have more flexibility to


make a charitable contribution. At least I'm not sure what the accounting, financial, and tax implications would be if a college/university made an athletic donation to another college/university. Then again I am assuming the money used to make the donation would have to be unrestricted funds unless a donation was made that restricted the funds to athletic charitable contribution to another college/university.

It is possible that a college/university can't make an athletic donation (or any donation) to another college/university for whatever reason. If that is the case, then competing in an athletic event with said school may be the only way money could transfer hands. Plus, if a college/university has enough extra money to make a charitable contribution to another college/university, then it could send the wrong message to the school's donor/fan base. If Notre Dame truly wanted to make a charitable contribution to Tennessee State in lieu of playing the football game, then I don't think there is anything preventing Notre Dame from telling its donors/fan base to make a donation directly to Tennessee State instead of Notre Dame. How likely is Notre Dame or any other school willing to do something like that? How likely is Notre Dame's donor/fan base willing to obey Notre Dame's request?
