The refs also need to be fit, and young

Full admission - I don't have statistics or follow basketball officiating that closely. Since the game is so fast, refs need cat-like instincts and damn near perfect eye sight to catch these things like steps, dribbling, palming, moving screens, etc. Sorry, but I know from my experience officiating high school football that being over 40-45 is a big handicap for refs. That's when your vision and fitness (i.e. speed) start to leave you. And the players and games are just getting faster. Unfortunately, that is likely where most college refs are now - over 45 years old. The profession isn't attractive to young, athletic types anymore.
