There is almost no better way to lose your non profit status

Than mis directing restricted gifts. So I don’t think any smart non profit would take that chance. Plenty of unscrupulous ones have and they usually get caught pretty easy.

Some organizations, like the United way, takes an administrative cut from all donations. If a non profit is using an outside professional fundraising org they do to. I don’t have a copy of the Hokie clubs bylaws or their 990 to determine whether they take an admin cut of funds pledged to specific teams. Often thats disclosed on websites too.
