I agree with just about everything you say, but have a couple questions.
Specifically about stalling in the first period. Are you saying you wouldn't call stalling in the first period ever? It kind of seems like that, but you do talk about calling stalling to avoid a take down which I would agree with.
I look at the overtime stall call on Chad Red and think that should be called stalling in overtime or 10 seconds into the match. It was clearly stalling and I think it should be called every time. Although most fans in the arena seemed to disagree with me. If I'm not mistaken that ref is usually the ref in Cassell.
I'm also curious that you talk about being a ref and thinking about the motivation for stalling. Never having been a wrestling ref, I have to ask is thinking about the motivation part of the job description? When I reffed other sports, a trip was a trip regardless of motivation. I think if stalling was called more objectively without consideration for circumstances or motivation, it would help a lot. I would love to know your thoughts with you having been in all of the positions on the mat.
And I could not agree more with you about stalling on bottom. Most of the time I see it called, I wonder what the guy on bottom is supposed to do when the top guy has his face planted in the mat and wrist control. Most of the time I think stalling on bottom is ever warranted is when the bottom guy is winning and just doesn't want to risk getting turned by trying to escape. I think it is usually pretty obvious.
I also really like your thoughts on top stalling. It seems like you would have been a very good referee.
