“One problem the MV-22B has for these missions [TRAP] is that no other
model of aircraft is fully capable of escorting it.
The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II fighter jet is one candidate, but lacks the Osprey’s endurance. Helicopters such as the Bell AH-1Z and UH-1Y don’t have the speed to escort the MV-22B, so they need to launch early in order to be on scene for the Osprey’s landings.
Over the last few years, the V-22 has been tested with forward-firing rockets that would give it a self-protection/escort option, but this adds considerable weight to the aircraft. The optimal escort solution is still being studied.”
