I think they are fairly mechanically reliable.


Most of the early USMC crashes were pilot error. They would get into "power settling" doing a steep approach and not recognize what was happening until it was too late to recover.

One of my VX-1 squadron mates was at Quantico waiting to ride one of the first test birds when it crashed into the Potomac. That was a mechanical flaw, which I think they corrected before it went into full production.
