Russians always think someone is going to invade or take over

Given their history it's a justifiable fear. Honestly I think that's what's motivating Putin - wanting to reestablish a buffer between the motherland and potential invaders. I don't think he's crazy or a megalomaniac or anything like that. I think he's Russian, and that has historically meant two things - a priority on preserving the country's integrity, and a belief that an autocratic type of government is the most effective way to do that.
