I think China's opinion of Russia is more "they are the enemy of my enemy"

than they are my friend.

China's real goal is to replace the US as the global economic and political superpower. I'm not sure Russia really fits in with that goal one way or the other beyond the fact they are not allied with the West. China views one less Western ally as a good thing.

But they are hardly cheerleading Putin right now. Granted, they aren't really doing anything to stop or discourage him either.
