Germany and Hitler repeatedly gambled by throwing the vast majority of their forces into a given attack and leaving their other border very vulnerable. If the French had attack Germany in the fall of 1939 while Germany committed their forces to the Polish Invasion they likely could have caused Germany great difficulty. Also the French failed to learn the lessons of WWI and left themselves susceptible to invasion by the same route employed in WWI.
