A buddy of mine was a gunsmith in the Richmond area
I built 2 AR-15s with him, both chambered 223/556. I also had a .308 win semi-auto (AR 10 platform) at one point, mostly used for long range target shooting (occasionally hunting) - it was consistent accurate and packed a punch even a longer ranges 600-800 yards. The 6.5 creedmoor is something my gunsmith friend would talk about a lot, he built one and it was a great round to shoot. The 6.5 is a soild round in comparison to the .308, but I personally liked the .308 better bc the ammo was easier to find, i enjoyed shooting the round more and it was slightly more consistent.
Another round you may want to look into is the 300 win mag, it is a very intriguing long range round, depending on how far you are trying to shoot, it is also an extremely consistent to shoot, but is not available currently on the AR platform that i know of.
I hope some of this helps, but I have always enjoy shooting .308 either recreationally or for hunting.
The .338 Lapua has always intrigued me but I have never fired this round, nor known anyone personally that has.
