You can take a tour of all of the cartel owners’ mansions in PV. Just like
Hollywood. Hmmm
PV is the spot for the cartel rich and famous. When they blow through their pesos, they retire in Uvalde, TX. Uvalde is seriously becoming the retirement home for OG Mex mafia. Insane.
There’s a bus tour that leaves from the hotel area right on the beach.
If you have extra time and rent a car, definitely drive east toward Guadalajara on Carretera de las Palmas. You will remember me saying this- you will hate the stupid speed bumps across the road- but maybe 45 min east of PV is San Sebastián. It’s a reeeally cool little town right out of Colonial Spain. Check ahead and they might have a live band in the town square when you’re there.
You can go watch tortillas being made from scratch and have amazing authentic colonial Spanish / Mex food.
There’s also a road that leads up to the radio tower up above the town a few miles. Again, it’s a little adventurous, and you’ll have to drive your rental through a very shallow stream, but it is definitely worth the view. It’s insane, and you can see all of the way back to PV and far north and south.
Ask around and there might be that band playing that night. They have tour buses that go up there every day, but no need to take the expensive tour bus if you have a rental.
Finally, while you’re there, buy some Mexican cactus alcohol. I can’t remember the name of it right now, but that stuff is legit. It’s clear, like vodka, but really strong and tastes really good. Just do not drink a ton, because you then have to drive all of the way back down the mountain to PV. And those goddamn speed bumps.
Also, the turnoff to San Sebastián is likely not marked well for a reason. It’s on the left side of the road as the road turns fairly sharply right, going uphill, towards Guadalajara. You’ll likely pass by it, and then within a mile, it flattens out and you’ll figure out you went too far and will have to turn around. If you go, tell me if I’m spot on with that.
Alternatively, pay for Mexican data service. You might get cell service, but intl roaming data won’t be included or we be really expensive if you don’t coordinate for it ahead of time. The data gives you location devices on your phone so you have GPS to tell you where you are. In any event, go into a bigger OXXO and buy a local PV map and ensure that San Sebastián is on the map before you buy it.
Hey, none of this has happened to me before lol. Except I was on a detail so I was reimburse for all of my overages and just had to pay out of pocket at first.
