True, but remember it was Catherine the Great who started the forced


relocation in the Donbas Region and the relocation of Russians to said region. Even after the rise of the USSR their relationship was "tense" at best. That was one reason Khrushchev gave Crimea to Ukraine even though many Russians didn't agree with the decision or even recognize it. They were willing to overlook it because the transfer was between USSR states. Then when the USSR broke up and Ukraine gained its independence, Crimea was an issue that the Russians planned to revisit at some point in the future. Well they did and we all know how that played out.
