Numerous factors in declining college football attendance.
We'll see if the recent decline had more to do with COVID or if it's just a decline in interest. Personally, most sports fans that I know have less interest in sports overall. I pretty much have given up professional sports. This didn't just start with COVID. It's been happening since the early 2000's. The more professional college sports become, the less attracted I am to it. I prefer college softball and lacrosse over college basketball and football these days. The NCAA hasn't made things any better. Watching the haves get richer and more powerful turns me off. I've never been a fan of greed and fear. Conference realignment is based on fear and greed. College football and men's basketball have never been perfect, but they seem more like professional farm clubs now than college teams. The free agency, AKA transfer portal, doesn't make things better. Loyalty used to be a big part of college sports. I remember when professional players spent their entire career playing for one team. Those days disappeared 30 years ago. Now you can have 4 or 5 new starters on your college basketball team who will only be around for one season. Many of them won't even spend 9 months on that campus. The most beloved athletes on any college football or basketball team are the players who have been there for 4 or 5 years and show their love and loyalty to the school they represent, not the super star who came in for one season or the one who transferred after spending 6 months on campus.
