In VT's case, I would think where the majority of the fan base is located
in relation to Blacksburg and the dates of the home games would play a bigger factor than your "a" and "b." For example, just within VA the bulk of the fan base lives in either NOVA, the 757, or Richmond which is 5-7 hours 1 way to Blacksburg. If VT happens to have 3 home games in a row, then fans may not be as willing to attend all 3 home games regardless of the opponent particularly if other family members have activities scheduled Saturday morning.
For example, let's assume you live in Fairfax and have a 9 year old child. Do you go watch your child play youth rugby at 10am or drive to Blacksburg, potentially without the rest of your family, to attend a 3:30pm VT home game against #1 Alabama? If your significant other wants to work on a home project that must be done that weekend and it will take all morning to complete, then do you work on the home project or go attend a 3:30pm VT home game against #1 Alabama?
You might even say that those decisions may have a bigger impact on the diminishing of the regular season than expanding the FBS Playoffs could have because there is only so much time in a day and not enough time for a person to get to everything they want that day.
