If VT is playing #1 Alabama in Blacksburg it would be a sell out ;-)
I agree with a lot of what you have posted. But that is why you need the pool of interested attendees to be as large as possible - so that you can get 65k of them to show up. That starts with (a) having compelling match-ups that VT fans want to see in person. For example, I have (4) Golden Hokie season tickets yet I only go to 1-2 games a year. Why? Because I love college football and I would rather sit at home and be able to watch the other 5-6 compelling games that Saturday (along with the VT game) than spending an entire day or two to watch VT play Duke/WF/ Boston College/ Wofford/ODU/Liberty/etc. and miss the other great games I want to see (b) Playing teams that have traveling fans. Duke/GT/BC/WF/etc bring 200 fans to a game.
Additionally, as many have said for years – VT needs to improve the game day experience and we have done little to fix that.
Yes, it is expensive and takes a significant time investment. That is why VT (and a lot of other programs) need to fix some of the things above if they want to continue to have butts in seats on Saturdays. Every Saturday VT is competing with lots of outside factors to get butts in seats – they way to fix it is to make every home game as compelling, interesting, and exciting as possible.
