I ran at VT in the mid 80s. Redshirted my freshman year then nearly ripped my adductor magnus from the bone and had to retire. Those were the bad old days. We had two really good athletes, distance runner Jim Stickley and triple jumper Phil Saunders. Also had a decent pole vault crew. There was no outdoor track. The indoor track would go up in the Fall after the football team was done with Rector. Rector was shared. It was not unusual to have to dodge a soccer ball while running (had a teammate get his legs swept and dislocated his shoulder). We, the track team, quite literally put the told Madison Square Garden track together. It had many dead spots on it. Putting it together was also quite dangerous. After the season, it was often stored in pieces under Lane Stadium. When football got the fieldhouse back in the Spring, the jumping pits were set up under the stadium. So happy to see how far this team has come from being a total afterthought during the Metro years.
