On the one hand, every significant pay increase but one I've ever gotten


has happened when I left the company for another job. I have the misfortune of picking a career path that has landed me in cost-center operations where our only measure of success is how cheaply things get done. No real opportunity to impact revenues within my business unit. Which means, merit increases (barring a significant promotion) are basically inflation +/- 1%.

On the other hand, I've changed companies 9 times now :-)

I really don't like job-hopping. But I lost A LOT of money early in my career hanging around a company that was going through bankruptcy. There were I think four years in a row of 0.0 - 0.6% increases. And this was during the mid-to-late 90's when the overall economy was booming.

The baby boomer ideal of sticking with one company for 35 years and they will take care of you are not only gone, they've been gone for 30 years now.
