They may just tell them when they see them. I think norms have changed a


bit, at least on things like thank you notes. Maybe because people just don't send letters much anymore. I think it's a nice thing to do, but it's something you need to teach and encourage them to do.

I guess as a younger person (early 30's) my feeling when I send a gift is that I hope they got it and end enjoyed it, but that the focus is on the person receiving the gift, not the giver, so I don't necessarily expect anything in return. But again, it's a nice thing to do, and I certainly appreciate it when someone does it for me, and parents ought to encourage teenagers to do it.

Different generations have different ideas about what's polite and what's rude. There are norms that younger generations don't really follow, which offends older folks. And there are norms that younger generations follow that older ones don't which offends younger people. People just focus on different stuff. But I think this is an example of something that might've gotten a bit lost along the way, but that parents should make an effort to teach their kids.
