I haven't looked at the protocols for this season yet because until the
last week or so it hasn't mattered... but I think vaccinated players (which for us would be all or almost all) would only be tested if symptomatic. As far as I know yes the tests check for all variants although I don't think the normal testing can necessarily determine which variant someone has.
As far as why you care or worry about the virus if you're vaccinated/boosted... I can't speak for anyone else but for me it's a simple as having compassion/empathy for others. I don't want anyone to get sick. I definitely don't want to make anyone sick myself. That goes for any communicable disease whether it's a cold, the flu, mono, COVID, or Ebola. In general I don't think it's a good idea for anyone who is sick to be around other people. Even before COVID I hated when co-workers would drag into work sick and looking like death just so they wouldn't have to use their PTO. As far as COVID specifically I'm less worried about myself. Even pre-vaccine I would have been low risk. But I worry about my family and friends who are higher risk like my 94 year old grandfather with COPD.
