I ask the opposite. Why did the Rose Bowl bow down to the BCS/CFP?

The Rose Bowl is still great, but it ain't what it used to be after it failed to get the two champions each year.

Here is my compromise. 8-team CFP. Rose Bowl gets Pac 12-Big Ten champions NYD in a national quarterfinal. Yeah, yeah, I know. What if it creates an uneven bracket by paring, let's say, two top 4 teams? Well, I don't care. Either preserve it or don't preserve it.

-4 national quarter finals: 1 on NYE, the other 3 on NYD.
-Semi-finals two weeks later.
-National final the weekend before the Super Bowl.
