This is my latest attempt to show that recruiting rankings are not reliable and should only be reviewed five or six years later. I reviewed the 2013 top 25 VA HS players according to 247 Sports to determine which players contributed to their teams and which players were overrated or underrated. It may not be fair or accurate to label a kid as overrated when they do not contribute on the field and my evaluations only concern their athletic abilities.

Of the five stars, all three were contributors but Derrick Green was overrated.

Of the ten four stars in the top 25, two were overrated and two had to retire medically. Another did not play in order to pursue a singing career and he will be excluded from the calculations. 56% of the top 25 four star recruits who signed were contributors.

Of the twelve three stars in the top 25, three did not contribute, one opted out of football to run track and the other did not pursue football after high school. The track runner and the missing player will be excluded from the calculations. 70% of the three star recruits who signed & played were contributors.

After reviewing the 2013,2014 and 2015 VA Top 25 HS recruits on 247 Sports, I've found that 100% of the seven five star recruits contributed. Those percentages over the same time period dropped to 48% for the 27 four star recruits and 78% for the 37 three star recruits. Based on these three years, it might be more efficient to focus on the three stars on the top 25 list since they have higher success rates and there is less competition for them.

1. Christian Hackenberg QB had three HUGE seasons at PSU. 2nd Round NFL Pick
2. Jonathan Allen DT had three big seasons at Alabama. 1st Round NFL Pick
3. Derrick Green RB played at Michigan three seasons and transferred to TCU. He did contribute but he was not a star. Injuries might have been a factor. Undrafted. OVERRATED as a five star but he is probably still a top 25 player.

FOUR STARS

4. Holland Fisher S attended Virginia Tech for a year and transferred out. OVERRATED
5. Taquan Mizzell RB played four seasons at UVA. good APB/KR with big stats. Undrafted. Played in a few NFL games.
6. Matt Rolin LB started three games at Florida before MEDICAL RETIREMENT
7. Wyatt Teller OL multi-year starter at Virginia Tech. Fifth round NFL Draft pick
8. Ryan Burns QB Played at Stanford for four seasons. Started seven games as JR. Undrafted
9. E.J. Levenberry LB Played two seasons at FSU with minimal impact. Played one season at UConn with minimal impact. OVERRATED
10. Tim Harris DB battled injuries at UVA and had a couple good seasons. 6th round NFL draft pick
11. Michael Parker ATH He pursued a music career and sang on the Voice tv show as Mike Parker.
12. Doug Randolph LB played sparingly before MEDICAL RETIREMENT. He sued ND for not disclosing MRI results.
13. Bucky Hodges TE played three seasons at VT with BIG stats. 6th round NFL draft pick. UNDERRATED

THREE STARS

14. Daesean Hamilton WR put up BIG stats for PSU over four seasons. 4th round NFL draft pick. UNDERRATED
15. Braxton Pfaff OL started two years at Virginia Tech. Undrafted
16. Corwin Cutler QB didn't play at UVA and transferred to Hutchinson CC and didn't play. OVERRATED
17. Cequan Jefferson CB played four seasons at Temple with minimal stats. OVERRATED
18. D.J. Reid RB made minimal impact at Virginia Tech. OVERRATED
19. David Prince ATH left football program to run track & field at Virginia Tech.
20. Oren Burks LB played four seasons at Vanderbilt with impressive stats. 3rd round NFL draft pick. UNDERRATED
21. Jaylen Avent S did not appear on any rosters or stats. Whereabouts unknown.
22. Chuck Clark DB had three BIG seasons at Virginia Tech. 6th round NFL pick. UNDERRATED
23. Donte Wilkins DT started senior year at UVA. Undrafted
24. Evrett Edwards DB played three seasons at Duke and one at Iowa State. Two productive seasons. Undrafted
25. Andrew Motuapuaka LB played four productive seasons at Virginia Tech. Undrafted

41. Cam Serigne TE had four productive seasons at Wake Forest. Undrafted. UNDERRATED
44. Chasz wright OL multi-year starter at PSU. UNDERRATED

TWO STARS

54. Sharif Finch DE played five seasons at Temple. Big numbers final season. Undrafted. Played in NFL. UNDERRATED
57. Davon Grayson WR played four productive seasons at ECU. Big final season. Undrafted. UNDERRATED
66. Bunmi Rotimi DE played four productive seasons at ODU. Undrafted. UNDERRATED
72. Melvin Vaughn TE had three solid seasons at ODU. Undrafted. UNDERRATED
