Spoken from my experience working as university faculty:

1. It IS frustrating to work at a University that complains constantly about money and then gives a football coach a huge salary.
2. Not all faculty are like the ones jdkhokie describe - many don't make as much as people think, and most are hardworking. The "deadwood" faculty make all the rest of us look bad.
3. The professors at the U need to keep in mind that football has contributed a ton to their University - I argue that, like VT, Miami wouldn't have the national academic reputation it has without football success and the exposure that goes along with it. I was at VT during its transformation from a regional university to what it became under/after Beamer - VT's popularity and brand increased - buildings all of a sudden pop up all around campus, students weren't seen walking around campus wearing other college's gear any more, alum money rolls in, freshman SAT averages went up significantly, more applicants, more money, better faculty, etc. etc. Football had to contribute to that, it wasn't just coincidence.
