Not tracking the applicability of accounting procedures


think of a private university as having one big unified budget, and any dollars coming coming in can be spent on any expense*. Make a huge profit margin on your hospital system? spend that on athletics. (miami) Make a huge profit margin on your remote learning programs? spend that on athletics.
(liberty)

meanwhile public institutions are generally set up so student tuition (with the exception of athletic fees) and taxpayer funding are never spent on athletic expenses. athletics revenue and donations pay for athletics expenses. Public teaching hospitals also basically get to keep revenue in-house to do things like reduce education expenses and cost of care

What Miami and Liberty are doing is not illegal but it is sleazy in my book.


*obvious exception is grant money for specific projects/research
