Sounds dubious, but even if true, numbers aren't everything

Beamer and his staff were amazing at evaluating talent. I remember one time in the early 2000s, on the Hokie Hotline recruiting show, Bill Roth asked Beamer if anyone was likely to start as a true freshman. He named one receiver - David Clowney.

David Clowney was a 2-star receiver whose only other offer was Toledo. He played in every game as a true freshman. He went on to play in the NFL for several years.

This was a 2-star player that Beamer knew day one was going to be a star. (It's not like he was some kind of development project who blossomed his senior year.)

Beamer was just amazingly good at talent evaluation and we wound up with 2 and 3-star players who were as good as anyone else's 4-stars.

Fuente has never demonstrated any such ability.
