Clemson won a national championship literally 30 years before the became relevant again. Between 1993 and 2011 they finished 5 seasons ranked, only 1 of them finished in the top 20.

They averaged a top 20 recruiting class before 2011, since then they’ve averaged top 10.

Difference between 20 and 10 is far more than 20 and 40. If you’re going to talk about the “modern era” don’t reference bowl games from 40 years ago, or 15 years before the bowl alliance started.
