UTEP will have to try for MWC.
If they don't get in the MWC, they'll have to try for the WAC and turn football independent like New Mexico State.
Conference USA may need to become what the WAC is and try to pull from other non-football leagues to cobble together a conference like the WAC had to. Then they can try to put together a football league like the Big East tried to do by inviting football independents to join it. It would be a model not unlike the Big East had.
They have FIU, La Tech, UTEP, Western Kentucky, and Middle Tennessee State. They could offer football only options UConn, UMass, Liberty, and New Mexico State. It would be a football conference of 9 which the ACC was for many years.
I'm kind of surprised that the American and Sun Belt each are expanding to 14. I don't think that the ACC has experienced a really good scheduling model at 14. They were saying yesterday at the VT-SU game that this is the first time Syracuse has played in Blacksburg since joining in 2013. 16 is a much better scheduling model.
