IMO there are three things at play here...
1. The quality of WR coaching/development has decreased significantly since Jafar Williams arrived to town.
2. Scheme & general coaching... The scheme doesn't really help the WRs out. For example, if you watch the film you'll notice the primary WR running his route (or at least trying to) while the other eligible WRs are not selling anything at all (i.e. not finishing their routes, running lazy routes, etc.). It's all over the film. It's like they know whose supposed to get the ball and aren't terribly interested on every play.
The offense is based on "predictable outcomes" which means they try to scheme every play in such a way that there's a single predictable outcome (I know, there are certainly some elementary reads within, but it's otherwise very basic), a single thing that they want to see happen. I'm certain there's a second or third read thats supposed to be available, but we've never really seen that in the Corn-Fu offense thats been at VT.
All of this helps a defense out. If they can take away the primary read (play that WR really well) then it looks to us casual viewers like guys are never open. Now, with that being said, we've all seen BB3 completely miss (not see) open WRs at times, so sometimes they are there.
3. Chris Coleman beats this drum all the time, and I agree... Something int he S&C program is broken. Guys aren't getting faster (guys can certainly learn to run in a way that helps them become more "football fast") - guys aren't getting bigger - guys aren't getting stronger... Simply put, all of our WRs look like G-5 WRs IMO.
