It’s been more than a few years wrt the “game day experience” being a

major item for the entertainment and retention of fans.

In the Weaver days things got off the track with the elimination of the “stick it in” chant, and then the implementation of the “Hokie Respect” campaign. The “stick it in” chant and resulting body movements were, and maybe still are, more than the curmudgeon folks can handle, but it was fun and entertaining at that, and I’m in the curmudgeon group age wise. The Hokie Respect program was implemented somewhat from WVU fan bad behavior notoriety, but VT has some of the same kind of fan behavior issues too, just not as much of what was happening at WVU. But the program went too far and continual repetitive blaring of the policy ticked off a lot of folks.

Somehow they have to please the young generation, the family group, and the curmudgeon group, and that’s not an easy task. At my age I’m not embarrassed or really shocked by much and am fairly flexible as to what music, commercials, etc. they play to keep folks entertained during the game non action periods. The only real issue I have is sometimes you just want some quiet time to be able to chat with folks around you without blaring noise that makes that literally impossible at times. I believe it can be a lot worse at basketball games. I have both indoor and outdoor seats for football. It’s generally not bad inside, but this past Saturday I was glad the PA system went on the blink for a while. I’d forgotten what it was like to not have continual loud jabbering during the non-action time.
