I was at the 2003 game with a friend from WVU and was a lone Hokie in

a section full of 'eers fans only. They rooted like heck for their team, but never seemed over-the-top to me. I do remember, however, the West Virginia State police acting a little bit out of control when they started liberally dusting WVU fans that rushed the field after the game with pepper spray. I think they were protecting the goal posts at all costs.

The next week (against Miami) is when Tech had in place the goal posts that could easily be lowered with a big wrench. After we won, the posts were lowered and the police placed German Shepherds on guard duty at each end of the field. Nobody went near the goal posts.
