SOS can’t be easily controlled

Because it depends on the quality of the other teams in any given year. You could set up a schedule full of big names, but if they all have down years and losing records for some reason, your SOS will still be bad.

The whole SOS argument is a built in bias against the G5 conferences. OOC games every year demonstrate that the G5 teams are often equal to the middle and lower levels of the P5.
