I get that may be true if a person's "team" is located in another state

or even region of the US. Is it still as true if the person's team is "local?" For example, how likely is it for a person, who lives in Atlanta, to become either a fan of either UGA, GT, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, FSU, or UF because the person is in close proximity to these schools and/or gets to watch a lot of the school's athletic events on TV because Atlanta is considered to be in the school's "regional network."
