Are you sure the majority of college sports fans' connection to a school

is the Alma mater connection or was the "connection" built on other factors? I am thinking of programs like Notre Dame football, Duke men's basketball, UNC men's basketball, Kansas men's basketball, Miami football, etc. which could have a huge following that doesn't mirror the number of graduates the school has each year. Also, some of these schools happen to be the flagship of their university system which could help increase the size of their fan base. For example, the University of Wisconsin System has 13 institutions and 26 campuses with University of Wisconsin-Madison being the flagship university. Even if the other 12 institutions sponsor football at the DI-FCS, DII, or DIII levels (I don't think any compete in the NAIA), then they may also be a fan of the Badgers because that is the only schools that competes at the DI level in football.
